What Causes A Birth Injury?

Birth injuries can occur in many different ways, but they usually happen because of improper prenatal care or during the delivery. Cerebral palsy or other types of birth injuries can occur if a doctor or nurse fails to recognize or is slow to respond to the signs of fetal distress, or indications that the baby is in trouble. If the oxygen to the brain is disrupted during labor and delivery, a serious, permanent birth injury can result. Reducing the oxygen supply through the blood stream is one way of causing an injury or, sometimes, a physical injury, such as the use of forceps or pulling on a baby’s arm, can cause a birth injury.
